    NAME
         sdthotkey - CDE hotkey editor

    DESCRIPTION
sdthotkey is used to edit hotkeys associated with the
         workspace manager.

A hotkey is a general term for the association between a
triggering key and an event. For example: the association
between Alt+M and execution of the action Dtmail. A hotkey
corresponds to a workspace manager key binding field (see
the DETAILED DESCRIPTION section for more details).

sdthotkey loads the current hotkey settings and displays
them to the user in the main window. When sdthotkey saves
modified hotkey settings it informs the workspace manager
which then loads the modified settings. The modified set-
tings become active without the necessity of restarting the
         workspace manager.

sdthotkey displays the hotkeys in the form of a table with
         columns as follows:

              o Hotkey.

This represents a key and list of zero or more
modifiers that when pressed will trigger a chosen
event. The hotkey is presented in the same style
                   as menu accelerators.

              o Takes Effect.

The hotkey may be active on three types of
workspace area that may have keyboard focus:

                   1) Everywhere.
Regardless of what has keyboard focus the
pressing of the hotkey triggers the associ-
                        ated event.

                   2) Desktop.
The hotkey is active on the desktop areas,
which corresponds to the background area and
                        icons.

                   3) Application.
The hotkey is active in application windows
                        only.

              o Triggers Event

The hotkey may be associated with various types of
                   event.

A user may create a new hotkey or edit an existing hotkey by
means of the edit dialog window. This allows the user to
associate a hotkey with a number of events:

o The execution of an application or action and the
                   displaying of a document.

              o Workspace management functions.

              o Multi-monitor management functions.

    DETAILED DESCRIPTION
         BINDING OF FUNCTIONS

A hotkey corresponds to a workspace manager key binding
field in a key binding record, see dtwm(1) and dtwmrc(4).
The functions that sdthotkey may bind correspond to a subset
of the functions documented in dtwmrc(4).

The table below presents the sdthotkey events that
         correspond to workspace manager functions.

         _______________________________________________________
         Event Function

         Application f.exec <executable> <args>
         Action f.action <action> <args>
         Document f.action Open <document> <args>
         Previous Workspace f.prev_workspace
         Next Workspace f.next_workspace
         Goto Workspace f.goto_workspace <workspace name>
         Create Workspace f.create_workspace
         Delete Workspace f.delete_workspace
         Pack Icons f.pack_icons
         Refresh All Windows f.refresh
         Toggle Front Panel f.toggle_frontpanel
         Pass Keys f.pass_keys
         Next Monitor f.screen next
         Previous Monitor f.screen prev
         Last Monitor f.screen back
         Goto Monitor f.screen <screen number>

A hotkey bound to a function that sdthotkey does not support
is not allowed to be subsequently overwritten by the user.
For example, if Alt+F4 is bound to the function f.close the
user cannot assign a hotkey to the value of Alt+F4. An error
dialog box will be presented to the user informing them of
this fact when attempting to save the hotkey.
         HOTKEY CONTEXT MAPPING

Where the hotkey takes effect corresponds to a combination
of the workspace manager context values root, window and
         icon.

The table below presents the mapping between where the hot-
key takes effect and the workspace manager context when
reading a binding from a dtwmrc file and when writing a
binding to the sdthotkey dtwmrc file.

         ____________________________________________________________________
         Takes Effect Read Write

         Everywhere root|icon|window root|icon|window
         Desktop root, icon, root|icon, root|window root|icon
         Application window, window|icon window

         HOTKEY EDITOR SETTINGS FILE

The hotkey settings are saved in the file
         $HOME/.dt/sdthotkey.dtwmrc. sdthotkey and the workspace
manager load this file after all other dtwmrc files have
         been loaded.

The $HOME/.dt/sdthotkey.dtwmrc file should not be modified
         by hand.
